So You Want to be a Pornstar?
By Liselle

At Joybear, we often hear from people who fancy taking their love of porn a bit further. But how do you achieve this dramatic career change and turn it into more than a fleeting fantasy?
The Steps to Sexcess...
Don't leave your current job straight away! Some models still keep on regular jobs (or for as long as they can!) as work can be sporadic, especially until you are more established. Going part time at first would be ideal.

Get some good photos taken of you. They don't have to be professional but people will want to see what you really look like... with no clothes on! You'll need at least one good head shot and a couple of full-length naked shots, front and back - it's not all about bits... bums are important too!

Think about all your relevant experience to date. You may never have done porn before, but maybe you have other skills or talents that could be useful. When we're casting for our films, we always want to know if someone has something extra they can bring. Create a covering letter or resume that gives basic info about yourself and also says a little bit about who you are, why you want to move into porn and what you think you can bring to the industry. It doesn't have to be profound, just honest.

Contact some companies directly via email and send your details and photos. Production companies may employ you directly or via an agent.

Contact some reputable agents. We're always happy to recommend good agents to people and I'm sure many other film producers will do the same. Send exactly the same details to them and make it clear what kind of work you want to do. They may get you some initial 'try-out' work first, at a slightly lower rate (especially where guys are concerned because of the 'performance' risk!) for example, just a blowjob scene.

Some companies (Joybear included) will expect you to come to castings before giving you a role. Although it's extra hassle for you, it really is a positive thing. It gives you a chance to understand exactly what will be expected of you and it suggests the company cares about their content and even about you.

You will need to get a full HIV and STI test certificate. This needs to be updated every month, as your test can not be more than 30 days old for a shoot. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

Once you have had a few jobs and particularly if you have made a good impression, set your rate and stick to it. The agent will charge a fee to the producer on top of your rate, so your money should be all yours to keep. Companies expect to pay the agent on top of what they pay you, so agents should not sneak any of your cash!

Providing you're loving your new career as a pornstar and the work is coming... and coming... ;-) it could be time to give up that day job!

General Tips (and naked bits)...

Be enthusiastic, personable, reliable and well presented at castings or on shoots - obviously!

When contacting companies, don't focus on the vast amounts of money you want to earn. Yes, this is an incentive for everyone, but producers want to know that you also enjoy it and are going to give them a good scene. Lying there and thinking of your bank balance... before asking for your cheque, will please no one.

Set your rates and your boundaries. Decide what level you want to work to. You may want to only do girl/girl or boy/girl to start with because then you ease yourself into the industry and make sure you're happy. Your career also then has somewhere to go; girls who have established themselves in girl/girl only scenes and have a following, may get more money for doing a boy/girl scene if they later decide to do it. Having a fan-base pays!

Don't take any risks. Make sure you know the people you are working for are reputable. You will quickly get to know a lot of the companies and will meet other models and agents who can advise you.

Ask to see the test certificates of the other models you are working with. You are always entitled to do so.

Always keep your tests up to date. If you don't, you will not be able to work and the company that booked you will be unlikely to do so again.

Get yourself social networking! Many pornstars now get contacts, work and fans via their Facebook or MySpace pages!

I wish you good luck, lust and of course, lots of fun!
