Shooting My First Porn Film: Part 1 by Justin
So now you know how I got into this crazy industry it seems only logical to talk you through the first raunchy film I ever made. It was for Double Entry, the Playboy reality TV show that launched my 'adult' career. I cannot include a cheeky homemade short that I made with a certain ex, although technically that was my debut. No, this was to be my first 'major' production behind the camera.
For anyone interested, the show originally aired on Playboy in the U.S and U.K about 6 years ago. Considering the recession, it may get dragged out again for the umpteenth repeat so watch out all ye Playboy subscribers.
Back to the show, my starting point was the desire to create erotic films for couples and produce something with a touch of sophistication. My erotic films would have to have high production values and minimal cheesy 'acting'. I wanted to avoid storyline porn but it needed to be realistic and punchy (six years later, this is still Joybear's modus operandi). Some girl girl kissing, a smattering of lesbian hardcore sex and even a pinch of threeway action was probably on the cards. I finally came up with a loose plot about a group of hedonistic Londoners. It involved couples fucking in a secluded corner of a busy nightclub, a couple getting it on in the back of black cab and a threesome in a swanky East London loft apartment. In retrospect, I chose this theme for a number of reasons. Firstly, being a part time club promoter, I not only had access to a few venues but I was very much a part of the scene. Secondly, it was something I felt passion about. Thirdly, clubbing and sex (unless you've enjoyed yourself a bit too much over the years) naturally go together. I didn't need an excuse to link the two - it kinda just worked. Lastly, similarly with the clubbing venues, I also had some friends who kindly made their lofty apartments available to me. It all seemed to fit together.
Now that I was going to be working with Pros I needed some pointers. A few days into the program, erotic DVD giant, Playboy, laid on a blue movies video master class for us, lead by veteran producer, John Chalk. Our crash course in blue movie production was held on a quintessential porn set, in a studio in Wandsworth, West London (UK). John taught us technical aspects like shooting soft and hard material, simultaneously. In soft porn the sex is simulated, whereas in hard, you can see everything. We learnt about pussy lights and model releases. He gave us tips about getting the best out of models like always having chocolate on set for the girls. To this day, if you ever stumble across a Joybear set, you'll find a big bag of chockies (not just for the girls). He also advised us what we could expect to pay the models for their services. Around 250 a day for a guy and 400 for a girl. I know! At the time, I expected it to be more. I soon discovered well known stars and U.S performers can command higher fees. Without the master class, I could have blown the budget in an instant.
With the master class finished, it was time to start touting for talent. I managed to track down a telephone number for a stud (male performer) who had all the attributes I was seeking. Erotic DVD legend, Steve Hooper, a thirty five year old ex lawyer (who later starred in Joybear's Street Heat series) was a good looking guy with a great personality and substantial equipment! I called him immediately and explained what we were doing. Not only was he available but we got on like house on fire. I'd found my first model and leading man, phew! I later tracked down a leading agency. It appeared just as you could book a magician for a kids party, you could also book a porn star for a hardcore movie. I was making progress.
Bear in mind at this point I was still just like YOU (unless of course you worked in the industry or just liked filming a lot of sex). I could feel it - the nakedness was imminent. It was going to be strange asking complete strangers to remove their clothing for purely professional reasons. The adrenalin was pumping and I didn't give it a second thought. In retrospect, if I had stopped to think about what I was doing, I probably wouldn't have gone through with it. Isn't that the case with life?
