My Son the Porn Director By Justin's Dad
As it was a year ago that we asked Justin's Mum what she thought of her son's career, we decided it was about time Dad dished the dirt too.. |
JB: Were there any early signs to suggest Justin might become a porn director? D: He had always showed an early interest in acting, and in film studies generally, from even his pre-teenager years. He also stated that his ambition was to become involved in films as a director, rather than in an acting role. Porn was never mentioned by him (to me) during this pre-teenager period.
JB: Did he ever embarrass you when he was a child? Please give details! D: More times than I would care to remember and mostly due to his constant desire to act the fool in public. There were so many incidents that fortunately, for my own sanity's sake, all these past details are now just a dim blur. He is now 32 and still manages to do some really stupid things in public - like knocking over a wine glass when we were in a restaurant having lunch, only last month.
JB: How did he break the news to you that he was directing porn? D: I honestly don't remember and this event is possibly also lost in the same blurry shadow that represents my memory of times long passed. However he was always making everything into a joke, even when he was telling me about really important matters, so it is quite likely I did not believe it for quite a while.
JB: Describe your initial reaction and feelings at the time. Has he put his public school education to best use? D: As it's all a blur I really cannot tell you about my first feelings but I do remember asking him at that time what his mother thought about it. His reply was that she did not seem at all worried and she was keen to help him with doing it (although I don't think she intended to take an active role). He followed me to the same public school in the early 90s as I had been at in the mid-60s, when I am quite certain that my father thought that I had completely wasted those benefits as he had wanted me to become a lawyer. Justin entered into school life with gusto and achieved many successes with his sporting rather than academic activities. I am convinced that this style of education provided him with many of the best qualities that form his personality and character now.
JB: Did you have any concerns about him working in the porn industry? D: I was only concerned that he made the best success of his career, whatever he did, although the Porn Industry was undoubtedly not my own choice of a future career for him but from what I can see he does not appear to have been adversely affected by it.
JB: Have you ever bent the truth slightly when asked what Justin does for a living and if so to what extent? D: Depending upon the social company I am keeping at the time it has on some occasions seemed to be more prudent to say he is "working in the film business" contrastingly, at other times I have immensely enjoyed the shock factor!
JB: Are you proud of him and the career path he has chosen? If so, why? D: If he is happy with the work he does then that is probably the most important factor and I think he is. He is an accomplished performer whenever he is dealing with people and has a very creative mind so I think film directing is a pretty ideal platform for his talents. Like me, he would not be happy being a lawyer. |
JB: Have you ever seen any Joybear films? If so, what do you think of them? D: He asked me to look at and give my review for the first dvd, which was Joybear's production of 'Street Heat'. I viewed it as objectively as possible and tried very hard to think about the sort of constructive criticism any responsible father would offer after watching their son's first attempt at making a hardcore porn DVD. I said that I felt there were a few bits which became a little tedious and also some of the shots could have been improved upon if he approached the actor's genitals from different angles. He replied that I was not a good example of his target audience. I think I agreed. He never asked me to review another DVD.
JB: How has Justin working in the porn industry changed your views/perceptions of the porn industry? D: I don't think it has. When I worked in London in the 70s and 80s I did know a lot of people who were involved in all aspects of the film business. I rented a property to an American who ran a porn empire and I really enjoyed his company when I met up with him at his porn shops in Soho. My personal view is that there are some pretty sleazy people who work in all areas of the film industry and some of that has not changed although in current years the porn industry itself does seem to have gone through a 'facelift' and for the mainstream production it now appears to be far more respectable than in the past.
JB: What would you say to others on finding out their 'loved ones' are in the porn industry? D. You will probably not be thanked for making any attempts to stop them. You will want to offer support and advice to try to make sure they are going to be responsible and have a good sense of judgement about whatever is going to be their own choice for a future career - and hope they will be very good at it. Then they should be able to support you in your old age. (Pass this comment on to Justin please).
JB: What's the best piece of fatherly advice you have given him? D: Go to the Dentist regularly.
JB: What's the best thing about having a son who's a porn director? D: Not the obvious thing - if he was a furniture maker I suppose I could get my pick of either a new desk or a free coffee table but I have never asked for 'freebies' - nor am I likely to get offered any, after my attempts at reviewing the first Joybear DVD.
