How to Build Sexual Tension On-Set

Sexual tension? In porn? I know, unfortunately it can be a rare thing these days and new films often fall flat for me. As a fan of 70s and 80s erotic dvds, I prefer the tension and genuine enthusiasm that seemed to exist between the on-screen couples back then. I'm not even sure how they did it! Considering they were big budget features, probably with a substantial crew and studio deadline, you wouldn't expect natural sex to have room to breathe. I have always figured it was down to the differences in the industry at that time: more time and effort spent on each film; the level of acting that was required to build characters and situations; and the fact that most performers didn't set out to be porn stars.

So how do we make a new film that builds and captures real sexual tension in the modern adult industry?

This was our approach for Match-Mates:

1. Pairing up performers who genuinely fancy each other. This for me, is the key. It's an obvious thing but it's so often ignored. I know that companies who churn out vast amounts of content can't always manage it but at Joybear, it's a luxury we make sure we can afford.

2. Using comfortable locations. For Match-Mates we often used performers' own homes or invited them to a location where they could relax. This may not always be possible but for a reality-based film like Match-Mates, it was an easy choice that enhanced the outcome.

3. Cutting the crew down. Again, this is not possible for every project but we used a very simple three-man crew consisting of camera 1 (me), camera 2 (Justin) and a stills photographer. It just means you can encourage a relaxed and natural situation without it feeling so much like a film shoot.

4. Giving a helping hand. No, I'm not suggesting that I (or Justin) become a fluffer (yes fluffing is real but that's another blog). I mean creating an intimate and flirtatious atmosphere for the people involved. In Match-Mates, we opted for an ice-breaking beverage, some naughty games and a slow and teasing start to the sex. Having already sorted out 1-4 above, everyone was just looking forward to having some fun. And we did indeed, have fun. Perhaps my personal motto can actually be applied to this - Great company, great wine and even better sex.
